Young people from Illinois are spending less and less time outdoors. As a parent, you have a profound impact on the lives of your children. Introducing your child to the outdoors early and often. You may enhance some environmental knowledge they already have. You might even instill a passion for the outdoors that will stay with them throughout their lifetime. A solid plan is the key first step. A little planning goes a long way towards a successful and safe trip. An outdoor field trip is a great adventure for all involved.

Illinois is loaded with parks, natural areas, conservation areas, recreation areas, and fish and wildlife areas. These areas have information on camping, hiking, biking, fishing, hunting, state park lodges and resorts, interpretive programs and many great ideas for places to visit and things to do in Illinois. I like www.dnr.state.il.us

Just to get you ready for your outdoor adventures, Did you know that Illinois has adopted may natural elements here a few:
Illinois State Mineral – fluorite
Illinois State Fossil – Tully monster
Illinois State Prairie Grass – big bluestem
Illinois State Reptile – painted turtle
Illinois State Amphibian – eastern tiger salamander

Illinois many places to take your children outdoors here are just a :

1) Truitt Hoff Nature Preserve
DuPage County
To reach it from Roosevelt Road (Route 38), turn north on Kress Road, then east on Downs Drive, then north on Industruial Drive.
Truitt-Hoff Nature Preserve is located in the Morainal Section of the Northeastern Illinois Morainal Natural Division. 120.3 acres in size, the preserve encompasses high-quality mesic prairie, wet-mesic prairie, freshwater marsh, mesic silt loam savanna, and wet prairie natural communities.

2) Dixie Fromm Briggs Prairie Nature Preserve
Kane County
Access to the southwest corner of the proposed Nature Preserve is from Wynnfield Drive, which intersects with Sleepy Hollow Road approximately 1/2 mile to the west. Dixie Fromm Briggs Prairie, located in the Morainal Section of the Northeastern Morainal Natural Division, is a mosaic of natural plant communities arrayed upon a rolling topography with diverse soil types, different exposures, and varying moisture regimes. The dry prairie is extremely rare in Illinois. The preserve also has sedge meadow and graminoid fen wetlands.

3)Black Partridge Woods Nature Preserve
Cook County
Location and Access: Lemont Road north across the Des Plaines River, continue on Lemont Road to 111th Street (Bluff Road), then west and southwest 1 mi.
Black Partridge Woods in Cook County was one of the first dedicated nature preserves in Illinois. The river bluffs, ravine forests, and spring-fed streams represent communities typical of the Morainal Section of the Northeastern Morainal Natural Division of Illinois. The mesic forests are dominated by sugar maple, basswood, red oak and white oak, while the seep springs support skunk cabbage, marsh marigold, and a wide variety of spring wildflowers. Common animal species observed in the preserve include woodcock, gray squirrel, American toad, wood pewee, and red-headed woodpecker. The mottled sculpin, an uncommon bottom dwelling fish, occurs in the stream. Sculpins are restricted to cold and highly oxygenated waters like the stream at the preserve. Black Partridge was a chief and influential leader of the Potawatomi Indians in Illinois during the early 1800’s. His village was once located approximately 20 miles north of Peoria, but he is known to have traveled widely in Illinois.

OK, you’re not an outdoorsy folk but you know you children need to get outside. No problem their are many outdoor programs, classes and Illinois Summer Camps available in and around your home.

Hybrid Cars vs. Plug-in Hybrid Cars

August 6, 2009 by Owen Jones

Hybrid cars are on everyone’s minds these days. $20, $30, $40 or even $50 for a tank of gas? Who in their right mind really wants to pay that sort of money? But, frustrated, the petrol consumer sighs, but pays up. However, hybrid vehicles are being applauded for the little amount of gas they need to operate, and they are flying off the lots of car dealerships each and everyday in ever increasing numbers.

But what about a plug-in hybrid? Most consumers have heard that these cars are great too. So, someone might be asking him or herself, what exactly a plug-in hybrid is? How do they work, and what the difference between a plug-in hybrid and a regular hybrid is?

Plug-in hybrids are able to run just on batteries, but they use fuel also. These kinds of hybrid cars share some of the characteristics of hybrid vehicles. They are also are very similar to electric vehicles.

Plug-in hybrid cars need to be recharged externally by connecting a plug to an electrical power source. The combustion engine in plug-in hybrid vehicles is engaged only as a back up. These cars can run only on batteries if desired, but it is expected that these types of hybrid cars be plugged in every day.

Hybrid cars can go just as many miles as a conventional car. Designed to go the extra mile where gas-mileage is concerned, hybrids can be driven on the motorway, in cities, or wherever else anybody needs to go.

On the other hand, plug-in hybrids are designed to be driven commuter-type distances, meaning about twenty to sixty miles between destinations. This way, the plug-in hybrid does not have to use its back up combustion engine, but plug-in hybrids can go further using fuel too.

Hybrids help to reduce pollution, but they do still pollute the atmosphere. Compared with plug-in hybrids, hybrid cars still have a long way to go as far as pollution is concerned. Because plug-in hybrid cars can run solely on their battery power, they don’t have to emit waste fuel emissions at all.

Plug-in hybrids actually do cut total greenhouse gas emissions and plug-in hybrids use virtually no oil at all, imported or not. Studies have shown that electric hybrids emit at least 67% less greenhouse gases than diesel cars. Since the product used to power plug-in hybrids is completely renewable, the difference in greenhouse gas emissions may be even greater than the study showed.

And so there you have it. Those are the main differences between plug-in hybrids and regular hybrid cars. It makes a big difference, but you would be surprised how little that matters at the current moment. And that’s only because plug-in hybrids are not being sold to consumers at this present time. But this article should get you excited about the wonderful plug-in hybrid car, coming soon to a dealership near you.

And it’s going to be a spectacular debut too, since people already like the regular hybrid car models, but they haven’t seen anything yet until they see the new plug-in hybrid cars. However, for now, maybe we should just be satisfied with what we already have, because who knows? Before plug-in hybrid cars are brought out onto the forecourts, something even better might be introduced onto the market.

Youve probably seen the Garmin commercials that have come out around the Holiday Season for the past couple of years. A man is lost in his car while trying to do some Christmas shopping. Along the way, he picks up various Christmas characters off the street while a choir in the background sings the Garmin jingle. If hed only had a Garmin Sat Nav he would have never ended up in those bad neighborhoods!

The point hits home for us though, and it is easy to see that Garmin Sat Nav devices are the most popular navigation devices on the market today. They come in many assortments and styles and can be a very practical and smart looking addition to your car. A Garmin Sat Nav device can be a boon when trying to find your way around the city or place you arent familiar with.

The Garmin Company can be traced back 20 years to 1989. This is when a core group of people decided that the best manufacturing approach was to use a vertical integration process. This meant that all of the product needs from start to finish would be handled within the company. In just a few years the company was realizing success and by 2007 the core work force had expanded to more than 7000.

Why Garmin Sat Nav? Garmin has always kept the customer in mind when designing their Garmin Sat Nav devices. Garmin Sat Nav devices boast easy-to-use menus and practical features. The devices themselves look very attractive and can be mounted just about any where on your dashboard within easy reach.

There are numerous GPS functions that are used to make the Garmin Sat Nav an indispensable driving accessory. Users can be updated about any traffic holdups or accidents and given rerouting information instantly. There are split screen functions to use and the text to speech feature makes sure your hands are always free to do the driving.

There is no easier way to get directions and driving information than by using your Garmin Sat Nav. With an electronic navigator in your car you can settle back and let the Garmin Sat Nav map the course to any location you have in mind. The text to speech application has quickly become one of the publics favorite features. A Garmin Sat Nav is portable, powerful and adaptable. They are now used by pilots, boat captains and hikers who want to be sure of finding their way through unfamiliar terrain.

Many people wonder what the future of Garmin Sat Nav devices may still hold. The models made for cars have already become top sellers but there are many other applications that can make use of these navigational aids. One of the areas that is just starting to make use of this type of software is the market involving mobile hand held phones and computers. The sales of cell phones and other personal hand held devices are booming and Garmin is already poised to make their mark in this area.

It is only logical to predict that the Garmin technology will claim a large chunk of the GPS cell phone marketplace. The reliability and superior service from their products makes it a wonderful fit in the fast paced, competitive industry of cell phones. Soon when you want to discover directions or the closest shopping center you can use your mobile Garmin Sat Nav in your car or phone to find the answer.

Finding Fish

For the avid fisherman, a fish finder is a wonderful tool for you to take with you on your expeditions out on the ocean. The fish finder that you choose can greatly increase your odds of finding and catching all the fish that you want when you are fishing for sport or even as a commercial fisherman.

Finding where the fish are is the most important part of having success on your fishing trip. While some fishermen just use their instinct and search the sea for the best place to fish, others prefer to use a fish finder. Originally the technology was designed to allow the military to find submarines on the bottom of the ocean floor. Now the same technology can provide a fisherman with all the information that they need to find where the fish are located.

Fish finders use sonar technology to detect the area between your boat and the ocean floor and obstacles that are in between the two. Usually this means fish. Today’s fish finders are much more advanced than the original equipment that was used by the military. With a modern fish finder, you will have the information displayed to you with a map to help you locate exactly where the fish are above the ocean floor.

Fish finders make great tools for commercial fishermen who depend on the number of fish they catch for a paycheck. They’re also great if you’re just an amateur, though, and want to find more fish every time you go on a fishing trip. Fish finders are simply things you can use so that you get the best results you can when you go fishing. They’re also wonderful to take with you if you have others fishing with you, because guests, too, can then be successful when they fish. How’s that for being a good host and showing someone a good time?

As advances continue, fish finders will only get better. Technology continually improves, which means the fish finders themselves will also improve. Eventually, it’s expected that fish finders will be pretty much “foolproof.” It can be expensive to buy a fish finder if you choose a model with all the bells and whistles. Eventually, though, just about every fisherman, professional or amateur, will have this on their boats. One of the most popular is a handheld model that you can take with you wherever you go, so that you can use it even on someone else’s boat, not just your own.

There are a lot of different types of fish finders on the market, and lots of brands. It’s easy to choose the model that best meets your needs. If you fish occasionally and just for fun, you don’t need a terribly expensive model. If you fish for a living, though, you’re going to want to invest in a much more expensive model that’s going to get you good results so that your paycheck, too, is much improved over what it might be otherwise. Rest assured, though, that what you pay will come back to you many fold in profits. There are a lot of models on the market, so choose the one that’s best for you based upon your needs.

Technology In The Palm Of Your Hand ” GPS Handheld Receiver

March 28, 2009 by Alexis Kenne

Thanks to the relentless progress of today’s technology, our standard of living has improved dramatically over the years. A perfect example of this is the introduction of GPS handheld receivers. In days gone by, the average person simply couldn’t entertain the idea of exploring foreign lands for fear of getting lost. However, armed with a GPS handheld receiver, we can now safely explore any place we wish without ever having to worry about losing our way. Interestingly enough, the very first satellite navigation systems were already developed in the 1960s although at that point they were used solely by the military.

Looking similar to some wristwatches, handheld GPS receivers are small devices which are loaded with Global Positioning System technology. Their phenomenal popularity is hardly surprising, considering they can be used for such a wide variety of activities such as, hiking, climbing, trekking, safaris, fishing, hunting, and etc. As could be expected, handheld receivers are now also manufactured for specific purposes, such as the popular hunting GPS Handheld Receiver which is available in a camouflage finish and features a built in compass. Not only are these receivers extremely lightweight, but the also include a bunch of features such as graphics for all locations, up 2000 weight point storage and a ten to fifty retraceable path feature.

Of course, while the basic GPS receivers can be bought for around $100, these only have a very limited number of features. On the other hand, there are numerous models which include a variety of features such as:

Personalized icons Map Database MP3 Built in Anti-Theft WAAS technology Voice activated GPS Non-reflection screen

Everyone has their own reasons for wanting a GPS handheld receiver, some of which are:

1. If you are lost in a place you can do two things, either ask somebody the way or try to call some one to pick you up. However, if you are at a foreign place where no one speaks your language, then this device can tell you where you are and also give you the directions to your destination

2) The need for punctuality rates extremely high for some people and in this case, a GPS receiver can help you to determine the best and shortest possible route.

3) If for example you’re in a strange place when a medical emergency happens, you’ll have no difficulty at all in locating a hospital or a doctor. In fact, one can even locate a filling station if the need arises.

4. This amazing gadget is a small portable device that can be carried anywhere. Hence with this you will never get lost. You can easily find your way back no matter what circuitous route you choose

5. When you are traveling with your kids and family then you need to know the emergency services and the way to get to them. Carrying and scurrying for a car or map in your purse is time consuming. With this device all you need to do is to strap it to your wrist and find out the required information!

Yes a GPS Handheld Receiver is a desirable device, but over and above that, it’s a safety device which one should always have on hand.
