Cabo San Lucas – A Look at its History

April 7, 2009 by Sean Galusha

Some 14,000 years ago, the earliest people presumably set foot at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. The remote vicinity bounded by the ocean and desert was occupied by a tribe of Indians called the Pericu. The spot was also known as the favorite place of pirates. There was no steady settlement in the region until the start of the 20th century.

In the early 20th century, a group of Americans started fishing in the area. Eventually, a fishing company named Compania de Productos Marinos S.A was established. From there, a town was developed.

However, the place was nothing more than a quiet fishing village until 1974 when the government of Mexico had improved the roads leading to the village and other infrastructure in the area. These improvements had led to its major progress to become one of the most well-known ocean front resorts in Mexico.

It was in the early 90s when Cabo Wabo Cantina was put up in Cabo. It was then a small bar and restaurant owned and set up by Sammy Hagar, an American rock singer. It also started to draw people to the place. Today, it has expanded and still one of the popular attractions in Cabo.

The place developed into a luxurious Latin vacation spot especially after the construction of the Los Cabos International Airport as the tourists can easily access the place. Cruise ships coming from the Pacific coast also regularly dock at the port.

These were followed by the growth of many vacation rentals, resorts and grand accommodations to cater to tourists needs in the island. There are also increased properties owned by popular Hollywood celebrities.

From sandy beaches to beautiful villas, Cabo San Lucas also offers a wide range of fun and recreational activities. Tournaments on sport fishing are also held in the island year round. This famous tourist destination is also named ‘Marlin Capital of the World.’

Activities like golf, horseback riding and other fun activities are also available in Cabo San Lucas. Because of the romantic and relaxing atmosphere, the area has also been a top pick for weddings and honeymoons.
