Balearic Highlights With Mallorca Hotels

June 7, 2011   Filed under Travel

If you’re booking Mallorca hotels this summer, it might pay to do some reserach first, as the island has a fascinating history. The first humans are thought to have settled in the Balearic islands around 5000BC, which is an incredible thought. Over time these islands have been controlled by the Phoenicians, Romans and Carthaginians among others.

And fortunately for visitors, each of these ancient civilisations has added its influence to the culture, cuisine, architecture and more. Even the island of Ibiza was named “Ibosim”, after the Carthaginian god Bes… only to be renamed Ebosus by the Romans when they defeated Carthage and took control right back in 123BC.

The Moors eventually gained control of the island, before being taken over by the Catalans, the year 1229AD. If you’re booking Ibiza hotels, you’ll be able to explore the island and see the ruins and marks of its every-changing history, in the old town and beyond.

The island and its capital also go by the name of Eivissa in Catalan. The old fortress city was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1999 thanks to the diversity of sites of historical interest. Among them are the remains of the original cathedral, the castle and a 16th century monastery.

Meanwhile, if you’re staying at hotels in Majorca, then be sure to explore the capital city, Palma. Its cathedral is a hugely popular attraction, and was built on the site of an old Moorish mosque back in 1229, where it has stood ever since. Work continued on the exterior, with the outer facade being completed in 1602, but even today there are modifications constantly being made. Among the architects who have worked on it is the famous artist Gaudi.
